Polished Concrete vs Grind and Seal: Which Finish Do You Need?
By Faiz Azizan · Updated Thu Oct 22
Polished concrete is mechanically ground through progressively finer diamond abrasives to build a gloss. Grind and seal is ground to remove imperfections and then covered with a topical sealer, matte or semi-gloss. Grind and seal is usually quicker and cheaper; polished concrete is chosen for a high-gloss look. Confirm which one your quote is for.
The difference
| Polished concrete | Grind and seal | |
|---|---|---|
| Process | Ground through finer and finer diamond abrasives to build gloss | Ground to remove imperfections, then a sealer is applied on top |
| Look | Gloss graded in levels, from soft matte to high gloss in one vendor's four-level scheme | Matte or semi-gloss |
| Upkeep | May need periodic re-polishing, according to one Melbourne contractor | Generally needs resealing |
| Cost and time | Higher | More affordable and quicker, in the contractor sources |
| Typical use | Homes and showrooms wanting a reflective finish | Cafes, warehouses and budget renovations |
The four-level gloss scheme comes from a US abrasives vendor. We found no Australian standard that defines gloss grades, so confirm what a "level" means with each installer.
The labelling problem
A Melbourne polisher warns that coating or sealing after grinding is not true polished concrete, and that clients have sometimes received a sealer when they expected polishing. The fix is simple: ask the installer to state in the quote whether the job is mechanically polished or ground and sealed, how many grinding and polishing steps are included, and what product is used for the sealer.
Grip and wet areas
One Sydney installer says grind and seal can be made slip-resistant. A separate Australian installer notes polished concrete can be slippery when wet. Slip resistance depends on the finish and the sealer, so ask for a wet pendulum test result under AS 4586 for the system on offer. See epoxy or polished concrete for a garage for how the test works.
The slab matters
Both finishes start with the slab you have. Cracks, patches and moisture show up. Check the slab first: how a concrete slab is moisture tested.
Find installers
NSW Flooring lists 43 businesses with a confirmed polished concrete service, from Google Maps, retrieved 22 October 2026. Examples: polished concrete western sydney and polished concrete st george & sutherland, or browse polished concrete contractors in NSW. The listing does not say whether a business polishes or grinds and seals. Read how businesses are selected for the directory.
Quick answers
Which is cheaper? Grind and seal, in the contractor sources, but we found no NSW prices.
Which lasts longer? Sources say sealed finishes are less durable than polished ones, but give no figures in years. Ask for warranty terms.
