Hybrid vs Vinyl Plank vs Laminate Flooring in Australia
By Faiz Azizan · Updated Thu Oct 22
Hybrid flooring is described by retailers as the most water-resistant of the three because of its rigid core. Vinyl plank is water resistant and cheapest. Laminate is the weakest in wet areas. All three claims come from retailers, so read the manufacturer's specification for the exact product before relying on "waterproof".
Side by side
| Factor | Hybrid | Vinyl plank | Laminate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | Described as fully waterproof (retailers) | Water resistant | Medium water resistance, not for wet areas |
| Heat and sun | Rigid core handles temperature change better than standard vinyl | More movement with temperature | Not covered in our sources |
| Underlay | Usually attached | Not covered in our sources | Needs underlay laid first |
| Installation | Click-lock | Not covered in our sources | Click-lock |
| Price per m2 (retailer range) | $30 to $70 | $20 to $45 | $25 to $50 |
All figures are from Australian flooring retailers' pages and guides. Prices vary by retailer and product, and we found no independent test data.
What "waterproof" means
"Waterproof" is a marketing term here. A floor covering that resists water is, in our reading of the NSW Government waterproofing page, different from the protective membrane under a wet area, and waterproofing work above $5,000 needs a contractor licence in NSW. See waterproof flooring for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. For a bathroom or laundry, check the product's specification and warranty for wet-area use.
Installing over a slab
If any of these floors goes over concrete, test the slab for moisture first: how a concrete slab is moisture tested. A damp slab can make a floor fail, so ask what reading the manufacturer accepts and whether the warranty depends on a test.
Find installers
NSW Flooring has few listings that confirm vinyl, hybrid or laminate work: 11 businesses statewide, with no region reaching our 5-listing line for a ranked page. Browse the wider region pages instead: Western Sydney flooring businesses, Newcastle & Hunter flooring businesses and South West Sydney flooring businesses, or see vinyl and laminate flooring contractors in NSW. Data is from Google Maps, retrieved 22 October 2026: see the sourcing rules behind these listings.
Quick answers
Is hybrid better than vinyl plank? For water and heat, retailers say yes, at a higher price.
